When small warships rammed larger opponents

Ramming a larger ship was desperate rather than standard tactics, but HMS Spitfire's collision at Jutland shows that a small ship could survive it.

Question

How often did smaller ships try to ram larger ships, and did it work?

Short answer

Ramming could be a last resort, and a small ship could survive a collision with a larger one. HMS Spitfire and Nassau at Jutland provide the example, but no frequency is established.

Notes

Deliberately ramming a much larger warship is a desperate option when the smaller vessel is already expected to be sunk. It offers no dependable prospect of success. HMS Spitfire's collision at Jutland nevertheless shows that a destroyer could survive contact with a dreadnought and return with part of the larger ship's plating caught on her bow. The German ship is initially misremembered as Pommern before being corrected to Nassau.
