Small carriers could support Britain's fleet carriers

Smaller carriers could support cruiser formations and global commitments, but replacing Ark Royal or the Illustrious class with them would sacrifice concentrated combat power.

Notes

The useful version of the small-carrier concept adds aviation ships alongside fleet carriers rather than substituting them for the main striking force. Ordering smaller ships after the Second London Naval Treaty could have supported Britain's dispersed cruiser formations and worldwide commitments. One proposed alternative was to build four or five Unicorn-type forward aviation support ships in parallel with the Illustrious class. Replacing Ark Royal or the armored carriers with small decks, however, would sacrifice the concentrated air groups required for major fleet operations.
