Sloops in task-force doctrine and command training

Small commands developed junior officers while sloops supplied mission-specific convoy and anti-submarine groups rather than a concentrated battle fleet.

Notes

Sloops belonged to a task-force philosophy rather than a fleet-battle philosophy. Their peacetime commands gave junior officers room to develop leadership and independent judgment. In war, the same ships could join convoy escorts and anti-submarine groups assembled for a defined mission. Judging them solely by their ability to fight capital ships misses both their institutional and operational purpose.
