Sloops turned ASW experiments into Flower-class requirements

Royal Navy sloop trials established the sensors, stability, and hull capacity required for wartime anti-submarine escorts.

Notes

Sloops carried the ASDIC and supporting equipment used to develop Royal Navy anti-submarine doctrine before the Second World War. Their roughly 1,250-to-1,350-ton hulls were large enough for ocean service and the necessary systems while remaining poor-value targets for a submarine. Trials across the classes revealed the equipment load and stability a practical escort required. Those findings informed the minimum hull sought for the later Flower-class corvettes. Peacetime experiments aboard adaptable ships thus shaped the rapid wartime expansion of convoy protection.
