Were the Slava-class ships simply cheaper or backup Kirovs and replacements for the Kara class?
Short answerThey shared some design lineage, but Slava was built around long-range strike and political presence, while Kara supported a task group with anti-submarine and air-defence weapons.
NotesKara combined anti-submarine weapons with medium-range air defence and served inside a task group. Slava carried sixteen large long-range anti-ship missiles and could become the visible centre of a group. In this interpretation, it was a command and presence ship that could represent Soviet power in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific while the carrier programme lagged. Shared hull lineage did not make the two cruisers operationally interchangeable.
