The Sierra Leone convoy route linked trade protection and fleet response

The SL route's loss statistics and its destroyers' later pursuit of Bismarck show how convoy safety depended on both organization and mobile naval response.

Notes

Sierra Leone convoys carried strategically important goods from Africa, India, and Southeast Asia toward Britain. Of roughly 275 SL convoys, 27 were attacked and 78 ships were lost, making the route comparatively safe despite the stakes. During the later Bismarck chase, Philip Vian's Tribal-class destroyers and the Polish destroyer ORP Piorun raced away from convoy duty to help keep the battleship under observation before her final engagement. Convoy protection belonged to a mobile fleet system whose escorts could also reinforce a wider interception effort.
