Skua accuracy survives its fighter compromise

A Vickers sight and night-strike requirement make the Blackburn Skua a precise dive bomber even though its engine leaves it short of true fighter performance.

Notes

The Blackburn Skua emerged under a fighter-dive-bomber label at a time when the Air Ministry resisted a dedicated dive-bomber category. Vickers, which already held many Royal Navy armament contracts, developed an exceptionally accurate dive-bombing sight. The requirement to attack at night made accurate weapon delivery especially important. The Skua's engine and speed kept it from succeeding as a first-rate fighter, but it remained an effective dive bomber. Its strong attack system should be judged separately from the role in which it was least competitive.
