Why Asahi carried fourteen six-inch guns

Before reliable long-range fire control, rapid-firing six-inch guns were expected to disable and burn enemy battleships at close range.

Notes

Asahi's twelve-inch weapons supplied prestige and long-range striking power, but hits at distance remained uncertain when she was designed. Her enlarged six-inch battery was therefore central to the expected close-range fight, where a high volume of fire could pierce unarmored areas, start fires, and overwhelm an opponent. Tsushima's pursuit phase shows how rapid-firing secondary guns could finish isolated ships after long-range fire broke the formation. The battery shows why a pre-dreadnought's tactical power cannot be judged from its largest guns alone.
