Sinop created naval heroes without securing the navy’s status

Celebration of Sinop elevated individual commanders, yet the Russian Navy still struggled to build the durable public legitimacy enjoyed by the army.

Notes

St Petersburg celebrated Sinop with jubilation and a major parade because the Russian Navy had been regarded domestically as untested and unpopular. Russian naval victories repeatedly produced individual heroes without making the navy itself feel like a core national institution. Nakhimov’s heroic death at Sevastopol and successful reputation were strong enough that Communist-era writers and filmmakers retained him as a historical hero, reinforcing the contrast between individual commemoration and institutional popularity. The army proved much more successful at building that broader public consensus. This distinction separates commemoration of Nakhimov and a famous victory from durable political support for naval power.
