The Sino-Japanese War and readiness for 1941

A final question tests whether Japan’s war in China reduced its ability to prepare for the later conflict with Britain and the United States.

Question

Did Japan’s war in China leave the Imperial Japanese Navy unable to prepare for the Pacific War?

Short answer

China imposed costs, but it did not remove Japan’s remaining time to prepare for the 1941 naval war; the earlier conflict also provided operational experience.

Notes

The Second Sino-Japanese War imposed a real burden, especially on the army, and still required naval participation and readiness. That conflict in China differed from the fleet war Japan began against Britain and the United States in 1941. Four years remained for expanding yards, logistics, training, and other maritime capacity. Combat in China also provided live-fire experience that could inform later planning. Being at war did not mean Japan was fully prepared for the particular oceanic conflict it later chose to fight.
