Singapore as a submarine base could reshape the Dutch East Indies campaign

Holding Singapore would put Allied submarines astride Japanese routes and make Borneo and the Dutch East Indies contested ground rather than automatic follow-on conquests.

Notes

Singapore's survival matters beyond the Malayan land front because it is a central submarine base near Japanese movement routes. American, British, and Dutch boats operating from there would spend less time transiting from Australia or more distant bases and more time attacking supply traffic. The geography resembles Malta: a fortified base in the middle of the enemy's operational system can impose repeated attrition from a central position. That pressure could make Borneo and the Dutch East Indies continuing battlegrounds rather than places Japan overruns on the historical timetable. Success would also concentrate Eastern Fleet, American, Dutch, and Australian assets around the base, reinforcing a position that proved it could hold.
