Singapore's guns redirected the invasion through Malaya

Singapore's coastal defences did shape Japanese choices, but the landward approach through Malaya exposed failures of field fortification, leadership, and resource allocation.

Notes

Japan did not choose a direct amphibious attack on Singapore because its coastal works raised the expected cost. The alternative route through Malaya demanded land defences that colonial economic interests resisted, including fortifying plantation terrain. The leadership comparison is between an energetic senior commander willing to override those objections and officers already worn down by war. Scarce capable leaders had been allocated to theatres considered more urgent.
