Singapore's missing defensive infrastructure

Roads, beach works, artillery positions, suitable ammunition and guarded reservoirs show how local infrastructure could have complicated the defence of Singapore.

Notes

Singapore turns the general fortress argument into a concrete infrastructure problem. A ring road, beach pillboxes, and prepared positions could have let mobile artillery shift between threatened sectors. High-explosive ammunition was also needed because armour-piercing shells alone were poorly suited to a land campaign. Most critically, troops should have guarded the reservoirs and other parts of the water supply on which the garrison depended. Static works could not guarantee victory, but roads, ammunition, positions, and protected utilities would shape how long mobile forces could resist.
