How fewer ships produce larger generalists

Fleet reductions leave individual ships carrying more missions, which can increase both displacement and cost.

Notes

Fleet numbers can fall while overseas tasks continue. Each remaining ship then needs more weapons, sensors and crew to cover a wider set of jobs. A larger hull becomes more expensive when it is filled with those additional systems. Railguns, hypersonic weapons and their power or command equipment illustrate why a proposed large surface escort needs substantial internal space. The resulting cost can encourage further cuts in ship numbers, repeating the cycle.
