A short Anglo-American war and an unfinished Civil War

The counterfactual forecast is a limited war and mediated settlement that pauses rather than resolves the struggle between Union and Confederacy.

Notes

The forecast gives Britain limited aims and avoids a prolonged campaign for Confederate independence. French support for Britain’s legal position and the sudden transformation of Confederate logistics would increase pressure on Washington to negotiate. A six-to-twelve-month peace might require the Union to accept the Confederacy’s temporary separation. Both American sides could then rearm for another conflict because Britain’s intervention arose from the Trent crisis rather than durable support for slavery or secession. A later war fought after emancipation became an explicit Union aim would create a very different British political calculation.
