Unable to outrun the approaching force, Azopardo chose to fight from both water and shore. He placed a battery and a mixed force of sailors and militia on the riverbank. When Belén and Cisne grounded, the shore guns could engage them effectively, but the revolutionaries lacked enough boats to mount a successful boarding attack. The Royalists freed their ships and withdrew before Azopardo could turn the grounding into a decisive result.
