Shiratsuyu was intended to advance with Japan's striking force and make day and night attrition attacks against an approaching American fleet. Its stated range of 4,000 nautical miles at 18 knots improves the cruising speed discussed for earlier classes, though the endurance is still judged modest. A maximum speed around 34 knots is considered potentially adequate for the task. Eight 610 mm torpedo tubes provide the principal offensive strength, alongside the five-inch guns.
