Shirakaze and the Minekaze destroyer balance

Shirakaze provides a 1920 baseline for Japanese destroyer speed, guns, torpedoes, range, and later anti-submarine duties.

Notes

The Minekaze class was a strong and relatively balanced starting point for interwar Japanese destroyer development. Shirakaze combined 39-knot speed, four 4.7-inch guns, three twin torpedo mounts, and minelaying capacity, but her 3,600-nautical-mile range was limited for Pacific operations. Her unusual torpedo arrangement placed one twin mount forward and two farther aft, giving the ship a distinctive attack profile. Her long career included carrier escort, coastal anti-submarine patrols, training, and aircraft-rescue work. These duties kept an older destroyer useful after its front-line role faded.
