Pronouncing Tribal-class ship names

A discussion of Huron and Ashanti shows why ship-name pronunciation can differ between period Royal Navy usage and the names used by the peoples concerned.

Notes

Wartime Royal Navy guides often recorded phonetic English renderings rather than the pronunciation used by the communities whose names were adopted. Speech also changes over time, so a modern reading of an older guide may miss what its compilers intended. Historians therefore face a real choice between period naval usage and the modern pronunciation of the people named. A poem reproduced in the Tribal-class book helps recover the period rhythm and pronunciation of several ship names.
