Why ship labels can hide operational roles

The scout-cruiser label shows why naval roles can outlast, and sometimes predate, the formal ship types used to describe them.

Notes

Labels such as cruiser and destroyer can make naval history look neater than it was. Cruising existed as an operational function before the formal cruiser type, while torpedo boats and destroyers adapted older small-boat attack and anti-boat functions to the self-propelled torpedo. The bureaucratic torpedo-boat-destroyer destroyer description captured the intended role more precisely, even if the Royal Navy chose the tidier scout cruiser. Ship classifications are useful shorthand for missions, but they do not replace examining what a vessel was designed to do.
