Chapter · 13:01-13:57

Conviction, parole, and a promotion Hirohito refused

Shimada received a life sentence for waging aggressive war and was paroled in 1955. Tojo apparently sought marshal-admiral status for him several times, but Hirohito refused.

Notes

Shimada was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for waging aggressive war against the United States, United Kingdom, China, and the Netherlands. He was released on parole in 1955 and died in 1976, aged 92, twenty-one years after his release. The earlier career discussion places him among the last surviving Imperial Japanese Navy admirals, with some uncertainty about who outlived him. Tojo apparently pressed more than once for his naval ally to receive marshal-admiral status. Hirohito's refusal shows a limit to Tojo's patronage even after Shimada had accumulated exceptional formal authority.
