Henry W. Slocum, commander of Sherman's left wing, receives less attention than his record warrants. He had commanded at regimental, brigade, division, and corps level in the Army of the Potomac. His eastern service included First Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Harpers Ferry, South Mountain, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. That breadth made him an experienced senior officer for a new Army of Georgia built from veteran formations. The march's dispersed columns rested on commanders who had learned through several very different campaigns.
