The Army of Georgia assembled the Fourteenth and Twentieth Corps from veteran formations under Henry W. Slocum. Slocum had extensive eastern-theatre experience, while Jefferson C. Davis and Alpheus S. Williams brought very different reputations and careers to their corps. Williams was an energetic division commander repeatedly overlooked for permanent higher command until his superiors found a role suited to him. The arrangement let the Fourteenth and Twentieth Corps exchange outer- and inner-column duties around Milledgeville. Williams's Twentieth Corps then drove along the central route toward Savannah while Davis covered the northern flank.
