Why Sherbrooke received the Victoria Cross

Sherbrooke received an exceptionally rare captain-level Victoria Cross after repeatedly driving a superior force away from the convoy and maintaining command despite a severe facial wound.

Notes

Few ship captains received the Victoria Cross for commanding in action and survived the engagement. Sherbrooke's citation recounts four enemy attempts to attack the convoy, each turned back by destroyer attacks and the threat of torpedoes. The German ships were forced outside effective range of the merchants and toward the British covering forces. After HMS Onslow was hit and Sherbrooke was badly wounded, he continued directing the action until command had safely passed to the next senior officer. Only then did he leave the bridge for medical attention, while still insisting on receiving action reports until the convoy was safe.
