Sherbrooke's destroyers defend an Arctic convoy

The Victoria Cross citation for Captain Robert Sherbrooke recounts repeated destroyer attacks that kept a superior German force away from an Arctic convoy.

Notes

The Victoria Cross citation describes Sherbrooke's command of the destroyer escort on 31 December near North Cape. His destroyers repeatedly closed a much stronger enemy and used the threat of torpedoes to force it behind smoke and away from the convoy. HMS Onslow was hit and Sherbrooke was seriously wounded, yet he continued directing the escort until another officer had assumed control. The citation credits his leadership with preserving the convoy and bringing it safely to its destination.
