Sherbrooke, Cossack, and forward firepower at Narvik

Cossack's charge into Narvik shows how a Tribal-class destroyer could bring four quick-firing guns to bear while presenting a narrow target.

Notes

Sherbrooke commanded Cossack during the final battle of Narvik, driving past a grounded freighter into the harbor and engaging German mortar, sniper, and rifle positions at close range. Warspite and the British destroyers advanced against German ships already short of fuel and ammunition. A Tribal could fire four forward 4.7-inch guns while showing a narrow profile, whereas a Type 1936 German destroyer could fire only two of its five guns straight ahead and had to expose more of its broadside to match that weight of fire. Twin mounts, faster-firing British guns, and larger gun crews widened the advantage. As the British columns spread toward a line-abreast formation, the German force could not match the volume of fire coming toward it.
