Seydlitz, Lützow, and the class's unfinished alternatives

Seydlitz moved from a proposed twelve-gun light-cruiser variant to an unfinished small carrier, illustrating Germany's unstable requirements for the class.

Notes

Seydlitz was first considered as a twelve-gun light-cruiser variant before Germany changed direction and pursued conversion into a small carrier. Her proposed air group comprised ten Bf 109 fighters and ten Ju 87 dive bombers, a modest force for the resources tied up in the hull. Work stopped in June 1943 and the ship never entered service in either role. The abandoned conversions show how shifting requirements consumed a nearly complete hull without delivering either the intended cruiser or an operational carrier.
