Was the Seven Years’ War really the first world war?

Regional names and earlier globe-spanning conflicts make the numbering of world wars depend on the definition being used.

Notes

The same conflict is remembered as the Seven Years’ War, the French and Indian War, the War of Conquest in French-speaking Canada, the Pomeranian War in Sweden, and the Third Carnatic War in India. Those names foreground different theatres within a connected global struggle. A claim often associated with Winston Churchill calls it the first world war. The Eighty Years’ War, Thirty Years’ War, wars of Spanish and Austrian succession, and Napoleonic Wars are other candidates under a broad geographic definition. Counting those conflicts could make the twentieth century’s numbered wars the seventh and eighth, while an industrial-scale definition supports keeping the conventional labels. The naming joke becomes a lesson in how periodization depends on explicit criteria.
