Serbia's river flotilla from frontier galleys to a modern service

Serbia's modern brown-water force traces its identity through centuries of river defence and a formal 1915 foundation.

Notes

The Serbian River Flotilla patrols the Danube, Sava, and Tisa while also supporting border security, counterterrorism, and environmental policing. It is a riverine branch of the Serbian Army, with its present form dating from 2006. The figures given for the modern force are 500 personnel and 29 vessels. Its formal foundation dates to 1915 and the first patrol vessel Jadar, alongside a longer tradition of defending rivers against Ottoman forces. Serbian vessels and personnel formed a substantial part of the Yugoslav river flotilla, and Serbia retained its river forces after Yugoslavia broke up.
