Henri Giraud refused to travel in a British submarine because of French anger after Mers-el-Kébir. With no American submarine available, Captain Jerauld Wright formally took command while Seraph's British captain continued running the boat. The submarine flew American colors and the crew attempted American accents, although Giraud was soon told the truth. The improvised arrangement enabled the extraction, and Giraud's party later transferred to a Catalina when communication problems interrupted the planned rendezvous.
