Chapter ยท 4:52-7:10

A scout cruiser built around its machinery

The Sentinel class shows how boiler and engine space shaped an early scout cruiser's hull, armament, and role beside destroyer flotillas.

Notes

The ships were awkward but revealing hybrids: large, destroyer-like vessels built to scout and support destroyer flotillas. Twelve boilers and two triple-expansion engines occupied about half the hull, leaving a compact platform for guns and torpedoes. The hull form had to deliver speed while wrapping much of the ship around its power plant. That balance explains the class's distinctive appearance and its limitations.
