Sentaro Omori began World War II commanding Destroyer Squadron 1 after promotion to rear admiral in November 1940. By Empress Augusta Bay he commanded Cruiser Division 5. The precise record of whether he was acting with higher authority or still formally a rear admiral remains uncertain in the available account. Japanese authorities later relieved him for withdrawing before what they understood to be an inferior American force. That judgment depended partly on inflated Japanese claims about enemy losses, including Morikazu Osugi's reports.

Omori's earlier destroyer command and post-battle relief show how ambiguous rank and inflated loss claims shaped Japanese judgment of the retreat.
