More precise sensors produce more detailed returns that have to be classified. The analogy is a forest viewed with the eye, binoculars, and then a telescope: each improvement reveals more trees and more possible reasons for one to look wrong. Better detection therefore increases the work of distinguishing a hostile contact from a false return. Redundant components are also needed so the system can cope with failures. Computing and cooling occupy space, and the technicians who operate and maintain them need accommodation and food. Software support adds another continuing requirement, so the sensor's impact on ship size extends well beyond its external equipment.

Better sensors create more computing and crew demands
A larger flow of sensor data requires classification, redundancy, cooling, and people whose own support needs consume hull space.
