Chapter · 13:24-16:06

Radar and sonar fits varied by individual ship

Unryu, Amagi, and Katsuragi carried different combinations of Type 21, Type 22, and Type 13 radar, while Amagi used a different hydrophone from her sisters.

Notes

Unryu and Amagi were completed with two Type 21 radar sets and one Type 13 set. Katsuragi initially carried two Type 21 and two Type 13 sets, but by 1945 her fit had changed to one Type 21, one Type 22, and one Type 13. Amagi used a Type 93 hydrophone while her sisters used Type 0 equipment, and all three shared Type 3 active sonar. Those differences affected how each carrier detected air and underwater threats, coordinated with escorts, and survived. The fit-by-fit inventory shows that Japan did not achieve the common wartime carrier configuration its high command wanted.
