Why did the idea of a semi-submersible battleship never take off?
Short answerSubmerging would sacrifice mobility and make the ship behave like a fort; only small low-profile attack craft offer a plausible niche.
NotesSubmergence conflicts with the qualities expected of a battleship. Lowering the hull would sharply restrict movement and turn the vessel into something closer to a stationary fort. That loss of mobility undercuts the reason to concentrate battleship-scale guns and protection in a seagoing vessel. A much smaller attack craft could use a low profile for a stealthy approach, but the concept offers little to a capital ship.
