Could an autoloader select a slower firing rate while the ship finds the range?
Short answerPotentially yes, if designed for it; the ship could range first and use the maximum rate once the firing solution was established.
NotesControl-system design determines whether an autoloader can use a deliberately lower firing rate. That flexibility would support the established practice of firing ranging salvos until the fire-control solution is satisfactory. Once the solution is found, the mounting can exploit its higher output without wasting ammunition during correction.
