The second Leander was a 50-gun cruising ship whose name carried useful associations in North America after the first ship's service there. She fought at Algiers, served as flagship on the North America station, and continued to the East Indies before becoming a receiving ship in 1822. Her active career and receiving-ship period together lasted only about seventeen years, much shorter than the first Leander's. Although she was one of the fir-built frigates, her timber was comparatively seasoned and she remained in acceptable condition when disposed of. The Royal Navy could also describe an extensive reconstruction as a refit, avoiding the political difficulty of requesting money for a nominally new ship.
