The Union defensive position survived the first day and received more than 20,000 reinforcements from Buell and Lew Wallace. Beauregard abandoned a renewed evening assault as darkness and rain arrived, then announced victory despite having no comparable reinforcements available. On 7 April the Union fielded about 45,000 men against fewer than 20,000 Confederates and drove them back. Beauregard preserved an orderly withdrawal, while command friction between Grant and Buell limited the vigour of the Union pursuit.
