Search catalogues broadly, then refine

A broad search for the term sloop can reveal National Archives records and holdings at other UK repositories.

Notes

The demonstration starts with the term sloop, a 1920 to 1940 date range, and all participating archives in The National Archives' Discovery catalogue. The catalogue distinguishes records held by The National Archives from holdings reported by other UK repositories. Designs, hydrographic material, photographs, logbooks, correspondence, and unrelated hits show the breadth of a first search. The British Library, UK Hydrographic Office, Imperial War Museums, National Museums Liverpool, Hull History Centre, and local record offices all appear as possible destinations. Broad searching maps what survives and where it is held before the enquiry is narrowed.
