The Seafire arrives after doctrine moves on

By the time the Seafire supplied the long-requested high-performance interceptor, the Royal Navy needed endurance and multirole flexibility as well as speed and agility.

Notes

A short-range interceptor could mix with attackers in a dogfight, whereas a patrol fighter needed the endurance to remain airborne and meet a raid farther from the fleet. The Seafire entered after combat-air-patrol doctrine had advanced, so it did not become the sole foundation of late-war fleet defense and also served offensive roles. The Corsair's combination of speed, power, interception performance, and endurance better spanned both requirements.
