The 1976 arrangement places Sea Sparrow in point defence, with a stated range of about 10 nautical miles or 19 km. Oerlikon 20 mm guns provide a closer layer, with version-dependent quoted reach extending to about 7 km. RIM-66A extends ship-launched defence to a stated 32 km, while the F-14A Tomcat and AIM-54 Phoenix add fighter interception. Long-range aircraft and missiles create threats at distances a ship's guns cannot cover. The combined layers give the fleet repeated opportunities to engage an approaching attack.
