Operation Sea Lion wargames and training objectives

The 1974 Sea Lion wargame illustrates how training needs shape scenario rules and the fighting participants encounter.

Notes

Wargame rules are designed to give participants particular problems to solve. The 1974 Operation Sea Lion exercise at Sandhurst serves as an example: an army institution needs land fighting to educate its students. In this counterfactual assessment, an equivalent exercise at Annapolis or Dartmouth would concentrate on the naval and air struggle and stop the Germans getting ashore. An air-force institution would have reasons to build a major air engagement into the scenario. These choices suit different training objectives. They also limit what a game's result can establish about the historical invasion plan.
