Sea Lion entered the war under Benjamin Bryant, a submarine officer who later reached rear-admiral. Her attempts against U-22, U-62, and U-74 show that submarine-versus-submarine attacks were not confined to the larger T class or compact U class. She also attacked surface warships and sank or damaged merchant vessels in northern European waters. Sea Lion participated in the Bismarck search before her operational career gave way to training work.
