Chapter ยท 10:22-13:26

Home Guard experience, local knowledge and uncertain morale

Home Guard units combined limited mobility with local knowledge and veteran experience that are difficult to represent in a wargame.

Notes

British preparations included auxiliary units intended to fight behind the lines and Home Guard formations with a varied collection of weapons. The Home Guard lacked the mobility and support of regular army units. Many members nevertheless brought First World War experience, knowledge of their home districts and close ties to the people they would be defending. Their resistance could buy time for their families to escape. Predicting their behavior requires more than assuming either immediate collapse or uniformly fierce resistance. Past combat trauma could produce different responses in different individuals. One proposed wargaming approach would give players detailed information about particular local commanders and units, allowing them to act from those circumstances.
