Home Guard units are expected to impose local delays, with regular troops arriving to reinforce the defense. An individual action might buy half an hour to an hour, or longer, for those troops to move into position. The regular army would have both mobile reaction formations and units holding fixed defensive points. Retreating regulars could join Home Guard units in towns and villages, using their knowledge of the area and prepared positions. Regular officers would probably take operational command while retaining the local defensive layout. Each successive German advance could therefore meet more troops gathered into the next position.
