Germany was developing purpose-built landing craft as well as converting barges. The engineer landing boat was self-propelled and had a shallow draft. It could carry two light vehicles or 20 tons of cargo, giving it a useful role in an amphibious operation. Only two prototypes were in service by September 1940, while other major landing craft arrived later.
