Amphibious tanks and the difficulty of landing armor

Swimming and deep-wading tanks offered ways to land armor, but transport stability and the size of the available force limited their usefulness.

Notes

Swimming tanks and deep-wading tanks were among the methods considered for getting German armor ashore. An initial plan to use 50 converted motor coasters proved impractical because the tanks and the ballast needed for stability caused the vessels to ground. By the end of August 1940, the stated amphibious conversions comprised 160 Panzer IIIs, 42 Panzer IVs and 52 Panzer IIs. These were the lightest versions of the respective tanks. The force is judged insufficient for the fighting expected after landing, with no clear way to put much more armor ashore.
