Chapter · 47:09-49:44

A mature aircraft caught Britain during a strategic transition

The Sea Fury delivered essential capability in Korea while British planning and investment were focused on the technologies expected to replace it.

Notes

The aircraft reached the peak of piston-fighter development at the moment institutional attention moved elsewhere. British planning concentrated on technologies expected to define the Fleet Air Arm and the wider navy in the future. Britain consequently entered the Korean War amid several transitions, leaving forces poorly positioned for an immediate conflict. Sea Furies and Fireflies nevertheless gave Commonwealth carriers the reliable combat power needed to support operations, making supposedly passing technology a key enabler.
