Why the Sea Control Ship was not truly cheap

Engines, electronics, training, and support costs erode the savings promised by the Cold War Sea Control Ship's smaller hull.

Question

What are your thoughts on the U.S. Sea Control Ship concept?

Short answer

Its smaller hull does not avoid the expensive machinery, electronics, training, and support system, so the promised savings are easily overstated.

Notes

Steel and hull volume are relatively cheap compared with machinery, sensors, weapons, aviation support, and the trained organization needed to operate a carrier. If a navy already builds large carriers, adding another large hull can be more economical than establishing a separate small-carrier system.
