Scylla was damaged by a mine on 23 June 1944 and thereafter served as an accommodation ship, ending her active operational career. Her damage came only shortly after she became Philip Vian's flagship for the Eastern Naval Task Force. Charybdis was lost at the Battle of Sept-Îles in October 1943 during Operation Tunnel. Her fate shows how a useful anti-aircraft cruiser was committed to a hazardous coastal operation under increasingly predictable tactics.
